  • DfT Policy Paper - Inclusive Transport Strategy

Created by Matthew // 1 thread

Lots of interesting stuff about inclusive transport regarding trains, buses, cars, public realm, streets and yes a bit about cycling too. Quotes:

    Shared Space:

8.11 While we consider CIHT and DPTAC’s recommendations and how to take them
forward, we are requesting that local authorities pause any shared space schemes
incorporating a level surface they are considering, and which are at the design stage.
We are also temporarily suspending Local Transport Note 1/11. This pause will allow
us to carry out research and produce updated guidance.

    Objectives regarding Cycling:

    • Update Local Transport Note 2/08, which sets out the Department’s guidance to
local authorities on designing safe and inclusive infrastructure for cyclists, to take
account of developments in cycling infrastructure since its publication in 2008 and
the responses to the draft AAP consultation and publish a revised version by early
    2019;
    • By 2020, explore the feasibility of amending legislation to recognise the use of
cycles as a mobility aid71 in order to increase the number of disabled people
    cycling.

  • Braunstone Gate - Places for People

Created by Clare Scott // 1 thread

The Braunstone Gate Places for People project has been working on making this popular street more friendly for the people who visit its shops, pubs, restaurants and clubs, especially those visiting on foot, public transport or bicycle. Some significant 'greening' has been going on over recent weeks, including creating a community garden, reworking the road layout and introducing planters at either end of the street and between the parking bays.

Here's some background to what's been happening, from Charlotte Jones, the Project Manager:

"People said they would like to see more greenery, wider pavements, welcoming entrances and less conflict between parked and moving traffic. The idea of the trial is to create green 'gateways' at all entrances to the street by widening some small stretches of pavements on either side of the road and lining the edges with planters. By changing the white lines at the Narborough Road end, the idea is also to guide the moving traffic away from the sides where people commonly park cars, and so reduce some of the conflicts between moving traffic and parked cars at this corner. We will be monitoring the effects of the trial and learning from it what the community would like to see as a permanent change."

This is a one month trial after which the Council will review with the community how it is working, what improvements could be made and how much longer it should continue. You are invited to be part in this discussion at the next Community Forum, on Wednesday 6th July, 5.30–7pm at The Laundry Bar, Braunstone Gate. More details about this project can be found on their Facebook page.

If you can't make the meeting, please post comments on here before July 15th and they will be forwarded to the Team.

  • Belgrave Road consultation

Created by Mat Scull // 1 thread

Consultation on the Belgrave Rd options.

    28th June to 4th August

In short, it's a choice between one and two lanes in each direction. The images released (23rd June) have no visible evidence of space for cycling unless you count advanced stop lines.

    Consultation - https://consultations.leicester.gov.uk/communications/belgrave-road

Leicester Merc article 23rd June (usual caveat re the comments) http://www.leicestermercury.co.uk/new-images-show-golden-mile-options/story-29432946-detail/story.html

  • Why shared space at junctions?

Created by Mat Scull // 1 thread

New cycle way punctuated by junctions. Where the bike track disappears, mingles with the pedestrians, crosses the road and eventually reappears. Amongst some poles for traffic signals etc. Really could do better.

  • A47 Alliance / Upgrade

Created by MJR // 2 threads

There is a group of councils and others (including the RAC) calling itself A47 Alliance with a website at http://www.a47alliance.co.uk/ calling for a road upgrade.

The A47 is a significant barrier to cycling in many places, such as the single-carriageway stretch from Tilney All Saints near King's Lynn to Swaffham that blocks several desired east-west cycle routes - it is narrow with much heavy HGV traffic, so it's a challenge to cross and feels no fun for most people to ride along. It is possible that any upgrades could be "cycle-proofed" (to use current jargon) to unblock these routes.

KLWNBUG has asked if CycleNation and CTC groups can be be invited to join the alliance.
